2023: ENetSuD Urges Kwarans Not To Vote Candidate Who Can't Answer Legislative Questions

The Elites Network for Sustainable Development (ENetSuD), the anti-corruption Civil Society Organisation popularly known to be promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability, has urged Kwarans not to vote any candidate that cannot answer basic legislative questions into the Kwara State House of Assembly during the 2023 general election.

On the organisation’s Imójútó Owó Ará ÃŒlú program on Sobi FM 101.9, ENetSuD’s Coordinator (Alagbonsi Abdullateef, Ph.D., LL.B.) said that voters should question candidates seeking legislative office on their understanding about existing Kwara Laws that need amendment and important Kwara issues that need new legislation to know if the candidates are fit for election as lawmakers. He urged Kwarans not to vote for a candidate that has no clue about lawmaking, which is the fundamental responsibility of a lawmaker, as voting such a person into the legislature will inhibit the development of Kwara state.

Alagbonsi further said that any candidate that has no information or data about the problems facing communities under the constituency s/he seeks to represent should not be elected, as someone who does not know a problem cannot provide a solution to it. Alagbonsi urged Kwarans to use the data of the CEMP needs assessment to be published soon by ENetSuD to interrogate all the people seeking political office in the 2023 general election.

ENetSuD also urged voters to assess the competence of lawmakers on the concept of Separation of power, Legislative power and autonomy, public interest decision-making, representation, legislative gaps, and legislative veto (override), among others, as these will inform Kwarans about the independent mind of a candidate to deliver good result in the legislature.

ENetSuD concluded that the quality of governance in Kwara state lies in the quality of lawmakers voted by citizens into the House of Assembly in the next election.
