Kano Calm, Quiet As Lockdown Records Total Compliance

KANO- The ancient city of Kano and its environs was largely calm and quiet on Friday, as the state recorded substantial compliance over a mandatory sit-at-home order by Kano state government to curb spread of COVID-19.

Markets, Shops, Malls and Supermarkets remained shut while major roads were empty of both human and vehicular movements on Friday.

Security operatives, consisting of the Police, Hisba, Civil Defense, Neighborhood Watch and KAROTA, were sighted by our reporters on a strategic locations within the metropolis to ensure the enforcement of the order.

Ambulances, security vehicles and health officials and press crew vehicles were also seen moving around, and a state official said those set of professional were carrying out essential service.

There are however the challenge of the homeless, hundreds of whom were seen by our reporters lying by the roadsides and in front of shops while their children played around on empty roads.

Along Nassarawa Hospital Road, Race Course Road, behind Central Hotel and along former Railway Quarters, the homeless habited pavements, walkways and road shoulders.

Attempts by Neighborhood Watch officials to disperse some of them were resisted as they insisted they had nowhere to go.

There was also non compliance by warehouse workers along Civic Centre Road and Ajasa Road, and some them told reporters that they were keeping watch over the warehouses. Some even said they literally live there.

As the lockdown is being observed, sanitation workers were seen removing refuse from the roads.

Islamic clerics in the city and it’s environs generally obeyed government directives on suspension of Juma’at prayers.

However, multiple security sources told this newspapers that no fewer than 8 persons were arrested when irate mob at Rijar Lemo within metropolis attempted to trigger security breach.
