Edo 2020: Obaseki Picks PDP Membership Card Today

Barring any last minute changes, Governor Godwin Obaseki will today formally announce his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a few days after resigning from his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) told our correspondent that the governor would register his membership at his Ward 4 in Oredo LGA of the state after finalising talks with PDP leaders at the national and state levels.,Independent News report

Obaseki, on Wednesday, met with the leadership of the PDP, led by its national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, in Abuja, as well as other governors elected on the party’s platform.

The meeting, which was held at the residence of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, also had in attendance Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto as well as other governors of the party.

“Governor Obaseki will pick up his card from his Ward 4, Oredo LGA, in Benin tomorrow (today).

“His return to the APC has been foreclosed due to the latest crisis rocking the party.

“The governor is currently meeting with the PDP national chairman as well as other governors elected on the party’s platform in Abuja; they have assured him of total support in his governorship bid,” he said.

Also, on Wednesday, the leading aspirant of the APC in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, thanked another aspirant, Hon. Osaro Obazee, for bowing out of the governorship race and declaring support for his emergence as the primary election draws near.

Obazee was one of the three aspirants cleared by the APC Screening Committee to participate in the party’s primary scheduled for Monday, June 22.

However, he announced on Wednesday his decision to step down for the race and endorsement of the candidacy of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

He pledged his support, alongside that of his followers, to the former Secretary to the State Government who is widely predicted to emerge as the APC’s flag bearer.

Sources said the third aspirant, Dr. Pius Odubu, is being prevailed upon to step down for Ize-Iyamu to enable the latter emerge the consensus candidate of the party.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, speaking through a statement signed by Prince John Mayaki, the Director of Communication and Media of his Campaign Organisation, expressed gratitude to Obazee and described his support as another “important boost” for his aspiration days before the primary election.

He said: “Hon. Osaro Obazee is a fine politician whose entrance into the race no doubt injected more life and excitement.

“He campaigned from his heart and took his message to members and followers of our party across the state.

“I am grateful to him for his endorsement and very confident that it will provide an important boost to our bid as we approach the primary election of our great party.”
