“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”
– Thomas Jefferson

The recession that is hitting the Nation by the day and coupled with the bad shape of the economy that is affecting a lot of people in this great Nation, this setback has actually made them to have low self esteem as well as lack of strong Positive Mental Attitude (PMA). This has no doubt led to withdrawal syndrome, lack of self confidence and low productivity amongst others.

It should be noted that the effects of lack of strong positive mental attitude could lead to depression that is; increase in the risk of mental illness such as depression which kill brain cells, and may even shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for learning and memory.

In the light of the foregoing, the importance of strong positive mental attitude cannot be over emphasized

What is positive mental attitude?

Shinesheet.com defined positive mental attitude as “a beautiful philosophy that promotes an optimistic approach in life, which then inspires positive changes and helps you to go through life with more joy and happiness.” Whilst Wikipedia posited that PMA “is that philosophy which asserts that having an optimistic disposition in every situation in one's life attracts positive changes and increases achievement. Adherents employ a state of mind that continues to seek, find and execute ways to win, or find a desirable outcome, regardless of the circumstances. This concept is the opposite of negativity, defeatism and hopelessness. Optimism and hope are vital to the development of PMA” and that “Positive mental attitude (PMA) is the philosophy of finding greater joy in small joys, to live without hesitation or holding back our most cherished, held in high esteem, and highest personal virtues and values.”

The big question is; how can you develop strong Positive Mental Attitude?

Some of the ways and manners you can develop strong positive mental attitude are critically examined below:

Positive Self Talk: You must develop positive self talk in order to develop a very strong PMA. You will realize that in all my articles I often end with the phrase ‘it is well’. This is a very strong positive self talk that I have developed over the years and it is well has really carried me far simply because it does not allow me to have negative thoughts at all and it does not allow me to be defeated by any temporary setback or challenge. So develop your own positive self talk now in order to imbibe the spirit of strong positive mental attitude.

Be Optimistic: Just have the mindset that it can be done and it would be done and/or successful. Banish pessimism away from your mind and in your dictionary and also be very optimistic that no matter how difficult a task is, you will get a very good result and you will realize that you will always get good results in whatever you lay your hands upon.

Develop SMART+ER Goals: SMARTER (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time Bound, Ethical and Review your Goals from time to time).  Kindly note that the moment you set goals as spelt out from the above, you will develop a very strong PMA because you will want to achieve the set goals and it will be very difficult to achieve set goals without having a very strong PMA. Not only that, let your goals have the concept of BHAGs (Big, Hairy and Audacious Goals). This concept was developed by Jim Collins.

Did you set Goals for yourself in the beginning of this year? If not, set one for yourself in this last quarter of the year and ensure you set goals for yourself at the beginning of the year and at the beginning of any new year henceforth. This is because the imperative of goal setting at the beginning of the year cannot be over emphasized.

Resilience:  Show resilience at all times. What is resilience? Oxford Dictionary defined Resilience as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties.” Whilst Wikipedia posited that “it is the ability to mentally or emotionally cope with a crisis or to return to pre-crisis status quickly.”

Psychologists define resilience as “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or workplace and financial stressors.”

Simply put, resilience is the ability to say “ Never say die until the bones are rotten.” Or Never Give Up!!!

Resilience is so important if you really want to have a very strong PMA. Infact Resilience is one of my Core Values!

Develop Core Values: These are the root beliefs that a person or organization operates from. They are the principle perspectives that guide a person or organization’s behaviour towards others according to medium.com.

What are your own Core Values? Mine are; “TREE (Trust in Almighty God, Resilience, Effectiveness and Efficiency).” Why don’t you craft your own Core Values now?

Mix with Positive Minded People: Do not mix with negative people because they will influence your thoughts and habit towards negative thinking and this will bring Negative Mental Attitude instead of Strong Positive Mental Attitude.

Use Positive Languages at all times: Never use negative languages but be positive minded and always use positive words at all times and this will enable you to develop strong PMA.

Try Prayer Power: The efficacy of prayer cannot be over emphasized, so pray at all times and you will see that Almighty God will continue to guide and also be with you in all your various endeavours.

So keep the dream alive! Success shall be yours!

Never Give Up!!

See You at the TOP!!!

It is well!
