FG Not Responsible For Local Constables’ Salaries – IGP

Inspector General Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba has absolved the federal government and the police authorities of any salary payment to recruited community police officers across the country.

The IGP made this comment as part of his address in response to an official verbal report to the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Tuesday Assayomo, while the number one cop in Nigeria was on a working visit to the state on Wednesday.

Assayomo had stated that the state may be vulnerable to banditry incursions from its unmanned forests.

“Kaiama Local Government Area of the State has a large ungoverned forest reserve that stretches to Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, which also makes the place a bandit rendezvous.

“The shortage of manpower has affected our policing capacity in the State, especially now that bandits are being bombarded and chased away from Zamfara and Katsina States.

The concern of Kwarans today is that they do not enter Kwara State through this ungoverned reserve forest in the Northern part of the State, hence my subtle request to the IGP to graciously help us,” the CP pleaded.

Responding, Speaking on the matter, IGP said that plans have been made to begin yearly recruitments of 10, 000 policemen from all 774 local governments.

But the IGP made a distinction between the recruitment and the community policing officers saying that the community policemen will not be paid by federal government.

“They are on voluntary services to their community.

“They undertake the job after they must have closed from their very day work,” Baba said.

The IGP further said that the purpose of the new employment is to have officer that will understand the terrain in order to fight crime across the country .

Speaking on welfare packages for the officers, the IG assured officers of adequate support, saying also that discussion on welfare, logistic, accommodation , uniform , equipment, emolument and pension are still on.

He also urged officers to shun bribery and corruption and remain morally upright in there dealings.

The IGP said Kwara is the 13th state he’s visiting since he became the number one cop. He also added that he will not relent in his drive to ensure safety for Nigerians.

He further congratulated the police command in Kwara for achieving the feat of being the most peaceful state.

Baba also reiterated that the police job can give both paradise and hell. “If you work well, you will be rewarded on earth and in heaven,” the IGP said.
