Tiwa Savage, Squid Game and iPhone 13 Top Nigeria Searches On Google In 2021


Google has released its 2021 Year in Search lists and it’s very interesting to see what Nigerians were majorly interested in throughout the year.

Nigerians searched for answers and information that revealed their interest in topics related to music, movies, TV shows,  sports, food, celebrity personalities, pop culture and lifestyle.

Some topics that were most searched by Nigerians include Tiwa Savage, Obi Cubana, Squid Games, iPhone 13, T. B Joshua and Chelsea F.C.

Below are the top trending searches in the most popular categories.

Musician, Tiwa Savage made quite a wave this year when news of her leaked sex tape broke. The artist had earlier mentioned the possibility of a leak as she was been blackmailed. When the tape made its way to the internet, some felt it was a publicity stunt.

Whether in search of the tape or her music, it is no surprise that she was at the top of the search list in the people and musicians categories. Obi Cubana was second on the top people search list. The businessman threw one of the most expensive burial ceremony the country has seen in a while for his mother. The funeral trended all over social media and beyond forcing to search for the business man.

Other people who trended on the top trending people list include Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu, both agitators for the Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups in Nigeria. They were arrested by the Nigerian government and their arrest made waves.

Baba Ijesha, a prominent Yoruba actor was also on the list. The actor was accused of defiling a 14-year old with video evidence. The case was publicised because of Baba Ijesha’s popularity and the foster mother of the girl involved, Princess, a comedianne.

Romelo Lukaku, Elon Musk, Omah Lay, Raphael Varane and Fabrizio Romano were also on the list.

In the top musicians category, asides Tiwa Savage who topped the list, Omah Lay, Ruger, Ayra Starr and Naira Marley also made the top 10 list.

American rapper, Bobby Shumurda, was number 7. The musician trended after his release from prison where had been incarcerated for six years. Seyi Shay, a Nigerian female musician also made the list after her infamous salon fight with Tiwa Savage.

Chidinma Ekile was number 9 on the list after making waves this year when she announced her crossover from secular music to gospel music. Lil Nas X and Buju, were also on the list at number 3 and 6 respectively.

Squid Game most searched series of 2021

Neflix’s Squid Game was number 1 on the top trending movies and series list. The series is a contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial debt, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for a grand prize of 45.6 billion won ($38.6m).

Other Netflix shows on the list include Red NoticeArmy of the Dead and The Harder They Fall.

Coming to America 2, a sequel of the 1988 movie Coming to America saw an appearance by Davido, a Nigerian artist. His appearance is perhaps what piqued the interest of Nigerians in the movie.

Black WidowEternals and Shang Chi, all Marvel movies were on the list at number 3, 8 and 9 respectively. Sex Life and Mortal Kombat at number 3 and 6 also made the list.

TB Joshua, Sound Sultan, DMX top list of 2021 loss

The sudden death of Prophet T. B Joshua this year was one that surely rocked the Nigerian internet this year. The popular but controversial Nigerian evangelical preacher was also a philanthropist as testified by people online and at the synagogue upon news of his death.

The global and national music scene also suffered losses in form of the deaths of American rapper, DMX and Sound Sultan, a Nigerian musician. DMX passed away from drug overdose while Sound Sultan died after struggling with throat cancer.

Dare Adeboye, the son of General seer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye also passed away this year. Femi Osibona, the owner of the collapsed Ikoyi building, who died in the building also trended this year.

Nigerian comedianne Ada Jesus, and actress Rachel Oniga passed away this year, representing additional blows to the Nigerian entertainment industry. Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II was also one of the top trending losses this year.

Other categories include the trending top devices of which Apple iphones 12 promax, iPhone 13 and 13 promax made entrances. Samsung, Infinix and Tecno were other device manufacturers that made the list.

Trending songs in 2021 saw Naira Marley’s Coming at the top of the list. Surprisingly, the song was widely condemned on social media as a result of its vulgarity. The artist also had another song, Koleyewon on number 4. Bloody Samaritan by Ayra Starr was number 2, with a dance challenge that was widely participated in on social media.

General information Nigerians searched for this year include the identities of Obi Cubana, Ada Jesus, Sunday Igboho, etc. There were also inquiries on how to check JAMB results, how to vote on BBNaija 2021, how to register NIN online, amongst others.
