Lawmaker Decries Low Rate Of PVC Collection

Meranda Lasbat, the member representing Apapa I local Government in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has nted with dismay the number of uncollected permanent voter cards (PVCs).

She decried the low collection of the PVCs, The Nation reports.

She noted over 20 million PVCs still remain uncollected across the country, according to a report by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

She said out of the 20 million, a million PVCs are in Lagos.

Lasbat believes the development does not augur well for the progress of democracy and the development of the state.

She believes it would create opportunities for incompetent persons to be elected into office as leaders and representatives.

Lasbat, who spoke during the eighth annual Constituency Stakeholders’ Meeting with theme: ‘2023 General Election: The imperative of Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC)’ urged members of the constituency to obtain their PVCs.

She appealed to them to shun all forms of voter apathy.

She noted that the imperatives of the PVCs are hinged on the need to ensure that people are eligible to exercise their civic responsibility.

“We engage in active participation in the general elections especially in ensuring that we vote the right, trustworthy, and competent candidates to be our leaders and representatives at all levels of government.


“Of course, the need for this cannot be overemphasised as a very important civic duty and a critical key to ensuring the sustenance of our transformative government and enduring democracy in the state and nation,” she stated.

Lasbat hailed the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for initiating policies that have been sustained by his successors.

The House of Assembly Chief Whip said that based on growth indicators such as job creation, employment, empowerment, waste disposal, safety and security, and business opportunities, the state has continued to excel, and it is no surprise that the state is ranked 5th largest economy in Africa.

She said: “With our proud records of dividends of democracy and achievements, we have continued to inspire many states and countries all over the world who are learning from us.


“It is highly instructive to note that these achievements have only been possible through the active, determined and patriotic participation of citizens like you in choosing those to lead us by voting for the right candidates and representative at all levels of government.


“It is through the continued performance of your civic responsibilities as citizens and as guaranteed by the constitution that we can stabilise our policy.


“Consequently, the Lagos State House of Assembly under the leadership of Hon. Mudashiru Obasa wishes to reiterate the need for everyone to obtain his or her PVCs in order to vote in the coming general election.”
