ABU Zaria Researcher Wins $48,000 GWB Grant For Water Project

A Senior Lecturer at Department of Physics, Ahmadu Bello University, Dr. Joseph Orojah Osumeje, has won a US$47,989 grant from Geoscientists Without Borders under the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) for water projects as support for humanitarian development.

The grant is meant to provide clean, safe and accessible water to two villages in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The two villages, with a population of about 25,000 inhabitants, are Angwan Rimi and Angwan Fulani.

As part of the project, through the use of geophysical techniques, a detailed sub-surface of the earth will be mapped to determined the underground water potential map, a well will be drilled at each site, water quality to be standardized and a water station to be built for each village.

A letter notifying the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University of the development, explained that the project was scheduled to commence this month (September, 2022).

Dr. Osumeje’s project, entitled “Determination of Underground Water Potential and Water Supply in some Rural Villages in Nigeria,” was selected by a Geoscientists Without Borders Committee for funding the project in the amount of US$47,989.

In a letter of award for the grant, the Program Manager, Geoscientists Without Borders (GWB), Pallavi Bharadwaj, commended Dr. Osumeje for his application for the grant to GWD.

“Congratulations! The Geoscientists Without Borders Committee selected your project,” Determination of Underground Water Potential and Water Supply in some Rural Villages in Nigeria” for funding in the amount of US$47,989.00”, said the letter of award. 

Geoscientists Without Borders is a Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Foundation that encourages and supports scientific, educational, and charitable activities of benefit to the geophysical community.

Its mission is mainly to support humanitarian application of geoscience knowledge and technology around the world. 

This is in addition to funding of projects that benefit communities in need facing environmental hardship and natural hazards due to resources shortages, natural and human induced disasters.  

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Kabiru Bala, commended Dr. Osumeje for his proposal that earned him the grant, saying that the feat was worth emulating.
