There’s something about a comeback story that captures public imagination in a way scandal never quite can; perhaps it is the quiet satisfaction of closure, or the spectacle of reinvention either ways, Abuja based lawyer and socialite, Adaobi Alagwu is milking every bit of buzz and attention her recently held glamorous wedding is giving her with the trending hashtag #AAK on instagram.
For many observers, this was more than a wedding; because not too long ago, Adaobi’s name was entangled in one of the most talked-about personal disputes in Nigeria’s social and media circles. A saga defined by denials, legal battles, and an unrelenting back-and-forth that played out in public view. At the center of it all was businessman Tunde Ayeni, whose repeated distancing from her claims became a defining feature of the narrative.
Those familiar with the earlier phase of the story often point to the imbalance that defined it. The secrecy, the tension, the uneven optics of a relationship that never seemed to fully exist in the open. Even moments that were meant to signify commitment carried ambiguity, confusion, manipulation and one party's consistent and unrepentant penchant for lies.
Yet, as Adaobi appears to have moved on, questions continue to trail the other side of the story. For Ayeni, the past few years have been marked by a series of public explanations and efforts to define his own version of events. But in the court of public opinion, he's often seen and regarded as a weakling of a man who is constantly embroiled with women drama, cheating allegations, fraud related cases (one of many is how he reportedly ran Skye Bank to the ground) and several other unprintable adjectives define his person.
So also for Fets, a company that appears to have been established solely for the benefit of Ada. He ran Fets aground from appropriating all available funds from the business to fund his faux lifestyle and sponsor Ada’s trips and childbearing expenses in America whilst his family and other long suffering staff wallowed in debts and unpaid salaries. Ask Tade Odunowo. But that is a story for another day.
Among certain social circles, there is a growing sentiment; fair or not; that his narrative and character has been complicated by contradictions and an inability to step fully away from the spotlight of controversy. Whether in media interviews or private accounts, social gists and voice notes that later surface, the impression many are left with is that Ayeni is a deceitful, manipulative, liar.
And so, what we are witnessing now is less about who “won” and more about who has managed to move forward more convincingly.
Adaobi’s wedding, in that sense, becomes a symbolic lesson of courage; not just of personal happiness, but of narrative control. A reclaiming of identity (that Ayeni and his goons spent money, time and effort to ruin) after a prolonged period of public scrutiny.
For Ayeni, however, the story serves as a different kind of lesson. Not necessarily about relationships alone, but about how quickly private decisions can spiral into public consequences, and how difficult it is to regain footing once that happens; as he continues to struggle through his old age, kids on social media are now making viral memes of him and Adaobi's new hubby, Honourable Akarachi is obviously younger, viral, more handsome and clearly a dotting father to Adaobi's child (who Ayeni continues to deny till this day).
Whilst Ada has taught all a lesson in resilience by coveting for herself a well established man who worships her with her close friends very delighted for her that she landed in her feet this time around as against what she suffered in her past relationship, whilst this one worships her ground, the other was a violent man who often beats her in an attempt to maintain control; perhaps that's why she's been so blessed.
Ayeni is far from settled. His wanton habit for being unfaithful continues to be his greatest tragedy. His friends, as Ada’s are at a loss as to how unaware he is to his shameless show of selfishness in self deception. Ayeni ruins his home and ruins the emotions of everywoman he meets. He neither can keep the spirits of his marital vows nor his empty promises to the numerous girlfriends he keeps.
In the end, time has done what arguments could not. Adaobi has settled down, stepped into a new life, surrounded by celebration and renewed perception. The other remains tethered, at least in part, to a story that refuses to fade quietly. with his reputation of being alone, still unable to cultivate any decent relationship at home or anywhere for that matter, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.
