Adamawa Rerun: PDP Warns INEC Against Undermining People's Wishes

By Afeez Saheed

The presidential and gubernatorial campaign council of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against undermining the people's mandate ahead of the re-run gubernatorial and house of assembly polls in the state.

It may be recalled that INEC has declared the outcome of the 18 March Gubernatorial election in the state inconclusive as according to the electoral umpire the cancelled votes are substantial enough to change the election results between the leading candidate and the first runner up.

The electoral umpire then fixed Saturday, April 15, 2023 for the supplementary polls in the state.

Addressing newsmen on Thursday in Yola, spokesman of the team, who doubles as the Fintiri campaign DG, Awwal D. Tukur said Adamawa people have expressed readiness to protect the mandate they freely gave Fintiri against all odds.

"That is also to sound a word of caution that the PDP will not in anyway also fold its arms and allow rigging and any violent procedure to undermine the people’s votes and mandate.

"Clearly we are ready to use all the necessary and available legal and constitutional means to secure our mandate.

"With this in mind, as we prepare for the rerun, our resolve is to win through due democratic means.

"It should be on record also that the PDP knows its legitimate ways and will definitely deploy the right and available ways to vote and protect the party’s supporters.

"This is also to let INEC, our umpire know that our party will be timely and ready to inspect and scrutinize all available sensitive electoral material(s) for transparency and effective monitoring.
In the same manner, while our great political party commends the security agents for the services rendered in the previous elections, it is again timely and most desirable to encourage them to  protect and guide the voters with high sense of professionalism they are known for, " Tukur said.

The campaign councils also appealed to the people especially in areas where rerun will take place to endure and come out en mass to vote governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for continuity and consolidation of development.

Tukur who expressed disgust with the crass and open partisanship of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari reiterated the stand of the PDP to the effect that the REC should recuse himself over partisanship.

He said the PDP has a good outing during the last series of election in Adamawa which culminated in the "successful election of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri with clear margin of over 31,000 votes ahead of the APC candidate."

"The votes were credible enough to have declared Right Hon. Ahmadu Fintiri, governor elect. Unfortunately, the INEC failed to do that thereby declaring the elections inconclusive with re runs to be held in some wards and 69 units of the state.

"Despite the fact that the election of the governor was inconclusive and many attempts were made by the APC and some partisan electoral officers to steal our mandate, the people of Adamawa state and members of our great party, PDP however remained calm and composed.

"All of them most sincerely deserve a mention and commendation for maintaining the highest regard for peace, tolerance and spirit of good democracy for which the state is saved from anarchy.

"Thanks for the kind and considerate nature of the governor whose humility and kind nature helped keep the state in peace and not in pieces.

"As a political party in the past weeks, we have had to cope with wrong allegations made by the APC, deliberately perpetuated to gerrymander votes and cause mayhem.

"That vile attempt and insincerity to steal the people’s mandate was however massively resisted and clearly rejected by the voice of those that truly understood and defended the right principles of democratic fair-play.

"Well meaning Nigerians, the media, members of the international community and election observers were quick to put on notice the wrong step to announce the APC Governorship candidate as winner who cooked up and circulated fake results ahead of the formal announcement by INEC.

"That again was understood by well meaning Nigerians as an outright gender manipulation to wrongly indict the conscience of the free minded good people of Adamawa state. With this background in place as we lookup to the rerun elections in two days time, I wish to express a kind appeal as the Director General of the state campaign council for PDP.

"I make bold to state that while we call for calm engagement and participation of  the people and citizens of the state, let us again get to prove to the world that APC did not and can not win this rerun by popular voting.

"That is also to sound a word of caution that the PDP will not in anyway also fold its arms and allow rigging and any violent procedure to undermine the people’s votes and mandate," he said.
